Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can be incredibly challenging, especially for a new or advanced diagnosis. To best serve you and your loved one, our team takes a tailored approach to assist individuals living with Alzheimer's or one of the other dementias. Our experienced caregivers are adept at providing personalized attention to individuals living with these conditions, maximizing their quality of life and maintaining their well-being. PSWs can manage feelings of disorientation, not being understood, agitation, responsive behaviours, or exit-seeking. We understand the challenges of these conditions and work closely with families to ensure the best possible care for their loved ones.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an overarching term that describes a group of symptoms associated with cognitive decline, affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities. While Alzheimer's accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases, the other main form of dementia is vascular dementia, which typically follows a stroke. Common signs encompass memory lapses, difficulty in problem-solving, and challenges in language and communication. There can also be shifts in mood, increased confusion, and difficulty following storylines. As each type of dementia presents its unique set of challenges, tailored care by trained individuals can make all the difference.

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive neurological disorder and the most common form of dementia. It predominantly affects memory, thinking skills, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. Early signs include forgetfulness, especially recent events or conversations, difficulty completing familiar tasks, and confusion regarding time and place. As the disease advances, symptoms become more pronounced, with individuals facing challenges in communication, disorientation, and changes in behaviour. The emotional and physical toll on affected individuals and their families is significant, necessitating compassionate and specialized care.

This custom care plan, rich in detail, aims to optimize quality of life, ensuring safety and security, while fostering as much independence as possible. People possess the extraordinary ability to channel memories from their early life. While names and dates can be difficult for individuals living with dementia, music and stories from their childhood can stimulate their minds in a unique, personal way. Through meaningful activities like listening to music and reading stories from our clients’ early years, we can stimulate their minds further. Additionally, our PSWs engage our client’s minds with stimulating activities like memory games, word searches, card games, puzzles, and others to keep their minds active.

Our dedicated team becomes an extension of our clients’ families, working in harmony to create a nurturing environment that promotes joy, satisfaction, and dignified living. At Compass Homecare, your loved one is our loved one, too.
